The Big IDEA:

The girls will meet once a month for two hours. Every meeting will be project based and end with them updating their digital portfolios that will include a reflection and images from the meeting.

We will team with the students from Girls Who Code FLC  who will deliver and provide content for the first six meetings.

Calendar of events:
  • Feb 15th, 3-5 pm -  Makey-Makeys. Girls will experiment with programming musical instruments and  games witih makey-Makey, bananas, play doh, coins and their bodies. The ideas are endless.
    • See wrap of the day here

  • March 28th , 3-5 pm (no school) - Digital Portfolios - the girls will build their digital portfolios (they don’t need to be published, if you don’t want them on the web yet) but it will be a place for our girls to document their experience.

  • Subsequent meetings will then move to Sundays from 3-5pm. Activities include:
      •  E-textiles (possible fee of $10/per person for materials)
      •  Arduino kits to do a few starter projects (materials provided for the day)
      •  App inventor
      •  Songs in Scratch
      •  Sphero robotics
      • Tinker - design logos/charms/something - to be printed on 3D printer
No experience needed. Just the willingness to engage and learn. Bring your own laptop - or let us know if you need to borrow one.

Much of the reason for starting this and seeing how far this goes is taken from a recent inspiration of CEO & Founder Reshma Saunjani recently interviewed on the Daily Show. Leslie Aaronson also works as a computer science educator and often sees the first stumbling block to coding is the fear to try or the concern that it will be hard. This club is meant to be fun and open ended. The first few meetings are about experimentation, building community and building the confidence to try new things.

We are in the early stages of making this club a commitment and any questions, suggestions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.
